Lending and returning books during a limited operation

2020-05-15 09:30

The library will be partially open since April 23rd. Who can visit it? How will lending and returning books work?

Update from May 5th: The library is open from 9 am to 3 pm from May 6th.
Update from May 11th: A limited operation described in the following post is applicable until May 31st.
Update from May 15th: Information about E-loan was deleted as remote access to E-loan won't be available from May 18th. From May 18th it is not necessary to tell the librarians your UČO upon arrival.

According to updates from the Government of the Czech Republic, university libraries will be accessible from April 20th to return or lend books. This permission applies only to university employees and students of all years.
We want to ask everybody to consider if a personal visit is truly necessary.

When a visit is not necessary

  • We have extended all loans until the end of May/June (you can find out the exact dates for returning your loans by logging into your account at katalog.muni.cz).
  • You can return your loans by mail to address Knihovna univerzitního kampusu MU, Kamenice 5, 625 00 Brno.

Opening hours

You can borrow and return books in the following weeks from Monday to Friday at 9 am - 3 pm as follows, subject to emergency conditions stated below.

Visiting UCL

  • Entrance to university buildings is allowed only to students who confirm the Declaration of Honor on the Absence of a Self-Quarantine Order and of the Absence of Symptoms of Viral Infectious Diseases.
  • Entry to the library is not yet allowed, so we will be handing over the books at the library entrance.
  • Please use the staircase below Medical bookstore to get to the UCL entrance. We recommend that you come to the library through a corridor overlooking the Faculty of Sports Studies and CEITEC.
  • When departing, please use the staircase under the Buffet "U Knihovny" and corridor overlooking the hospital.
  • Always keep a distance of 2 meters when queuing at the library hall entrance, the staircases and during contact with our librarians. Covered nose and mouth with a face mask are a matter of course.

Borrowing books

  • You need to make an order through catalogue so we can prepare your books. See below - ordering books.
  • Then you will have to wait for a confirmation email before you can head to the library (check your SPAM folder too).
  • Bring your pen for signing the loan slip.
  • When you arrive at the UCL entrance, please tell the librarians your name and surname and inform them whether you are going to return books or pick them up.
  • When borrowing, tell the librarians your name and surname. The librarians will bring the ordered books and place them on a cart. Please wait, and only step forward when the staff asks you to. Check and sign the borrowing slip and take the books.
  • Please leave using the staircase towards the buffet and the hospital.

Ordering books

  • You can order a book through the MU catalogue at katalog.muni.cz just as you would book a document (see ordering instructions).
  • However, in this case, you need to find an available book and click on "Place a Hold".
  • Make sure it has the word Monthly or Semestral in the Status row. Select only books from collections KUK - free access, KUK - reposit or KUK - Reserved Collection (Reserved Collection only to students in English study programmes at the Faculty of Medicine).
  • UCL will process your request and send you an email when the books are ready. You can pick them up the next business day.
  • By the time you receive the confirmation email, we will load the book to your reader's account.
  • If you fail to collect your book within seven calendar days, we will cancel your loan including the reservation and put the book back into circulation.

Returning books

  • With the extended loan periods in mind, we ask you again to reconsider whether it is really necessary to return the book now. If it is (e.g. you are finishing your studies at MU), you can do so at UCL during its limited opening hours from Monday to Friday 9 am - 3 pm.
  • When you arrive at the UCL entrance, please tell the librarians your name and surname and inform them whether you are going to return books or pick them up.
  • When returning, place the books on the prepared cart and step back so that the librarians can take the books to quarantine. We will deduct the books from your library account after five days.
  • Please leave using the staircase towards the buffet and the hospital.
  • Thank you for your cooperation and compliance with the above guidelines.
